Pioneer: design and document your own robot experiment

Plan interfaces, isolate faults and make a small engineering project reproducible.

By CYOBot · Updated

Before you start

Experience debugging smaller projects and reading the relevant electronics, firmware and assembly documentation.

A custom robot combines mechanical, electrical and software decisions. Choose an achievable demonstration rather than beginning with every feature at once. An obstacle-avoidance prototype or remote-control experiment provides concrete interfaces to describe and test.

Keep design files and code under version control, record the exact hardware revision, and distinguish measured results from proposed extensions. Advanced examples do not establish medical suitability, autonomous safety or employment readiness.

Try a small experiment

  1. Define the intended behaviour and what the prototype will not attempt.
  2. List hardware revisions, power requirements and interfaces from the actual manuals.
  3. Test subsystems separately before combining them.
  4. Publish a README with setup steps, test cases, photographs you own and unresolved faults.

What to record

Produce a design record with requirements, interfaces, test observations and limitations.
